Contemporary designers who work with an eye toward the Modernist tradition employ color as a cohesive force that unifies and enlivens interior space. In this forum, three prominent designers discuss their approach to color in textiles, wall coverings, and interior architecture, reflecting the legacy of Florence Knoll as well as other sources of inspiration, such as the natural and urban landscape.


Rebecca Allan is a painter and the head of education at the Bard Graduate Center.

Eve Ashcraft
is an architectural color consultant who has developed corporate branding and private residential palettes, as well as paint lines.

Elizabeth Dow is a designer of fine wall coverings and the director of Applied Arts School for the Arts in Amagansett. She recently developed wallpapers for the Oval Office and several private rooms at the White House.

Matthew Goodrich is a design strategist and interior designer at Rockwell Group. His current projects include a new building for the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York and a flagship retail store for Samsung.
